Position Summary

The Heavy Equipment Worker performs a variety of minor repairs and services to maintain motor vehicles. The Heavy Equipment Worker places and maintains decals on vehicles, checks and replaces batteries, rotates, repairs, and replaces tires, washes, polishes, and cleans interiors and exteriors of vehicles, drains, flushes, and replaces engine, transmission, and differential grease and oils, checks, cleans, calibrates, and replaces spark plugs, cleans and replaces oil and air filters. The Automotive Worker adjusts brakes, replaces windshield wipers, and similar minor parts, assists on major overhaul jobs by disassembling and cleaning parts, repairing components such as generators and water pumps, and replacing thermostats, points, electrical wiring and other items, maintains tools and equipment, and cleans work areas.

Essential Functions

  • Performs Organization, Intermediate, Direct Support, (and sometimes General Support) level maintenance and repairs on equipment as prescribed in the equipment Technical Manuals (TM’s) with the direction of a supervisor or a mechanic. Checks and replaces batteries. Rotates, repairs, and replaces tires.

  • Washes, polishes, and cleans interiors and exteriors of vehicles. Drains and flushes fluid systems as required. Assist mechanic in repairing and replacing engines, transmissions, differential gear cases, and other vehicle components as required.

  • Checks and replaces all lubricants in accordance with the appropriate technical manual. Checks, cleans, and replaces parts as needed. Cleans and replaces oil and air filters. Adjusts brakes, replaces windshield wipers and similar minor parts and repairs.

  • Assist the mechanic with replacing components such as cylinder heads, alternators, water pumps, radiators, and other unserviceable parts. Assist mechanics in their duties.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling very heavy parts and loads. Must be able to climb, crawl, stoop, bend, squat, and reach as required to work on equipment.

  • Maintains tools and equipment, and cleans work areas to maintain a safe work environment. Be able to work outside in inclement weather conditions when necessary.

  • Ensure that all tasks are performed safely and meet Government/Army standards when applicable.

  • Wearing safety items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) e.g. gloves, safety shoes, protective eyewear, hearing protection, and other items such as aprons or outerwear as appropriate.

  • Employee is required to maintain a valid state-issued Driver’s license and applicable Government/Army license.

  • Perform other duties as required to support the mission and contractual requirements.

General Requirements

  • Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs.; stooping; climbing; prolonged standing; prolonged sitting; and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to the weather. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas. Such PPE includes but is not limited to, head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision and hearing protective devices.

  • Must comply with OSHA, EPA, Fire Regulations and published Company work rules.

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Excellent attention to detail.

  • Ability to complete and prioritize tasks on multiple concurrent projects within given timeframes.

  • Work well in a team environment and able to work with a diverse group of people.

  • Discretion and trustworthiness due to frequent contact with confidential material.

Education and Citizenship Requirements

  • Candidate must be a U.S. citizen and ideally have completed prerequisite training for Army Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 91L – Construction Equipment Repairer – Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic or have equivalent training.

  • Candidate must possess a working knowledge of the appropriate tools necessary to perform maintenance tasks as well as have knowledge of standardized maintenance regulations – specifically DA Pam 750-8, Functional User’s Manual for The Army Maintenance Management System (TAMMS).

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED certificate.

  • Desirable: Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent organization is highly desirable.

  • Required: US nationality/citizenship and residence, with verbal and written fluency in English.
